Getting started with Snow Owl Learning Pod is quick and easy

How It Works: Class Schedule & Enrollment Info

Our small-group, live online classes are tailored for Alaska’s homeschool students in grades 6–12. Each course runs for four weeks, with 90-minute sessions held on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout January.

  • Financial Literacy: 10:00–11:30 AM Alaska Time
  • Digital Citizenship & Online Safety: 1:00–2:30 PM Alaska Time
  • Business Writing & Entrepreneurship: 4:00–5:30 PM Alaska Time

What we offer

 Explore our lineup of three-week, project-based classes for grades 6–12. Each course meets twice a week (1 hour/session), with a maximum of 15 students to maximize interaction and support.   


All classes: $149.99 per student, per session (3 weeks, 6 live meetings). Use your homeschool allotment or pay directly.   

Basic Income Tax Prep

 This course introduces high school students (grades 10-12) to the fundamentals of preparing individual tax returns using the IRS VITA Basic Tax Prep curriculum. Students will learn how to accurately prepare simple returns, understand key tax forms, and become familiar with tax laws relevant to typical taxpayers.


Throughout the course, students will practice real-life tax scenarios, including filing status, income sources, credits, and deductions. Upon completion, students earn a certificate that prepares them to assist in community tax preparation programs, offering a valuable credential for work and volunteering.


What You’ll Learn:

  • Understanding tax filing requirements and deadlines
  • Navigating common tax documents (W-2, 1099, etc.)
  • Calculating taxable income, standard vs. itemized deductions
  • Claiming tax credits and exemptions
  • Completing Form 1040 (basic) and related schedules
  • Ethical considerations and client confidentiality
  • Practical application through hands-on tax return preparation exercises

Course Format:
Two 90-minute sessions per week for three weeks, live online instruction (max 15 students). Graduates receive a Tax Prep Certificate awarded upon successful completion, enabling students to participate in real tax assistance efforts.

Advanced Income Tax Prep

 Take your knowledge beyond the basics in our Advanced Income Tax Prep course, designed for high school students (grades 10–12) seeking a deeper understanding of tax preparation. Building on the IRS VITA curriculum, this course explores more complex tax scenarios and advanced filing techniques, empowering students to handle a wider range of real-life tax challenges.


What You’ll Learn:

  • Preparing tax returns for self-employed individuals and gig workers (Schedule C)
  • Understanding and applying education credits, such as the American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning Credits
  • Managing dependent and multi-state tax situations
  • Navigating retirement income, investment income, and capital gains
  • Advanced tax planning strategies for individuals and families
  • Completing additional IRS forms and schedules (Schedule A, C, D, EIC, etc.)
  • Strengthening skills in client communication, ethical decision-making, and data security


Course Format: Two 90-minute live online sessions per week for three weeks (max 15 students). Successful completion of the Basic class is required. Graduates receive an Advanced Tax Prep Certificate, qualifying them to take on more responsibility in community tax assistance programs and preparing them for paid or volunteer roles in the field. Must take the Basic section first.

Microsoft Office Fundamentals

 Build essential digital skills for school, college, and the workplace in this hands-on course for students in grades 6–12. Microsoft Office Fundamentals introduces you to the core functions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—giving you the confidence to tackle assignments, organize data, and deliver standout presentations.


What You’ll Learn:

  • Creating and formatting documents in Microsoft Word
  • Building and managing spreadsheets, charts, and formulas in Excel
  • Designing engaging PowerPoint presentations
  • Applying practical skills through real-world projects and scenarios
  • Tips for file organization, collaboration, and best practices


Course Format:
Interactive online sessions, twice a week for three weeks (maximum 15 students per session). Students will complete practical projects in each application and, upon successful completion, receive a Certificate of Achievement to showcase their digital literacy skills.

Financial Literacy for Teens

Get ready to take control of your money! In this practical course for students in grades 7–12, you’ll learn how to budget, save, manage accounts, understand credit, and make smart choices about spending and borrowing. Perfect for young Alaskans preparing to navigate real-world financial challenges, this class gives you skills you’ll use for a lifetime.


What You’ll Learn:

  • Setting up and sticking to a budget
  • Saving for goals and managing bank accounts
  • The basics of credit, loans, and responsible borrowing
  • Understanding paychecks, taxes, and insurance
  • Wise spending habits and how to avoid common money mistakes


Course Format:
Two interactive online sessions per week for three weeks (max 15 students). You’ll complete hands-on projects, real-world scenarios, and receive a Certificate of Completion to showcase your new financial skills.

Business Writing & Communication

Sharpen your written and verbal communication skills for real-world success. Designed for students in grades 9–12, this course covers everything from crafting clear, professional emails to writing persuasive proposals and delivering engaging presentations. Whether you’re preparing for college, the workplace, or leadership roles, you’ll build must-have skills to express yourself with confidence and impact.


What You’ll Learn:

  • Writing effective emails, memos, and business documents
  • Structuring persuasive proposals and reports
  • Developing clear, concise, and professional communication
  • Strengthening presentation skills and public speaking
  • Using correct grammar, style, and tone for different audiences


Course Format:
Live online sessions twice a week for three weeks (maximum 15 students). Students participate in real-world writing projects and presentations, earning a Certificate of Completion to demonstrate their communication expertise.

Entrepreneurship Basics

Got an idea? Learn to think like an entrepreneur! Students explore small-business planning, marketing, and pitch their own mini venture by the end of class.  u retain information and apply what you've learned in real-world situations. Grade level 9-12

Digital Citizenship & Online Safety

 Navigate the online world with confidence: privacy, safety, social media smarts, and using the internet as a learning tool.  Grade level 6-12
